The Doors by The Doors.
Few debut statements arrived as fully formed as this one from The Doors. Produced by Paul A. Rothchild under the production supervision of label head Jac Holzman, and engineered by Bruce Botnick, the record captured a Los Angeles quartet already in complete command of its identity. William S. Harvey's art direction frames Guy Webster's iconic front-cover photography and Joel Brodsky's back-cover images, making this a visual object as memorable as the music it houses.
Musically, the album thrives on an unusual chemistry. Ray Manzarek anchors everything from the organ, piano, and bass lines, carrying the low end on keys in a way that gives the band its unmistakable swirl. Robby Krieger's guitar moves between flamenco-tinged delicacy and raw electric bite, while John Densmore's drumming brings a jazz-schooled sense of dynamics and restraint. Over it all, Jim Morrison's vocals shift from a crooner's intimacy to full theatrical abandon, turning songs into something closer to ritual.
For the collector, this pressing offers specific points of interest. The runout reveals 'TD ESR' etched stacked on Side B, lacquer cut by Terry Dunavan, alongside an 'EAST' embossing around the Side B spindle hole and the 'SRC' logo in the runout. The song titles sit higher toward the spindle, a label variation distinguishing it from neighboring issues. A handsome, playable copy of a genuine cornerstone.
