Twist With Etta James by Etta James.

Few labels capture the raw hustle of early-sixties R&B quite like Crown Records, and this 1962 release finds Etta James riding the dance-craze wave that swept the nation. Issued as the twist exploded from clubs into living rooms, the album positions one of soul's most commanding voices against the era's irresistible rhythmic pulse. It's a snapshot of a singer in her prime, bridging the earthy grit of the blues and the bright, body-moving energy of a brand-new pop moment.

What carries the record is Etta herself—that unmistakable instrument capable of swaggering confidence one minute and aching vulnerability the next. She leans into the uptempo material with a playful fearlessness, her phrasing loose and alive, never sacrificing the depth that made her a legend. The arrangements keep things direct and driving, giving her room to testify, shout, and swing while the groove stays firmly in the pocket. It's soul music built for movement, but shot through with genuine feeling.

Pressed in High Fidelity, this is a desirable piece for collectors who prize the vintage Crown catalog and early Etta James material. There's a warmth to these grooves that rewards attentive listening on a good turntable, and the historical weight of an original-era pressing only adds to the appeal. For anyone building a serious soul or R&B collection, it's a genuinely satisfying find.
