Winston-Salem, NORTH CAROLINA - Cherry Street - YMCA, High School, Church - 1912: Around 1912, the intersection of Fourth and Cherry Streets in downtown Winston, North Carolina, served as a prominent civic, religious, and social hub.
Key Landmarks (Left to Right along North Cherry Street, c. 1912)
• First Presbyterian Church
> History: The congregation originally formed in 1862. The Gothic Revival-style sanctuary standing at that time (built in 1888 to replace the original 1861–1862 building) sat near Third and Cherry Streets. (Note: This 1888 sanctuary was later replaced by the current church building in 1971).
• City High School (Winston High School / Cherry Street High School)
> History: Situated on North Cherry Street directly between First Presbyterian Church and the YMCA. Opened around 1908, the facility served as the primary high school for the city. On January 9, 1923, the school building was tragically destroyed in a major fire.
• YMCA Building (Young Men’s Christian Association)
> History: The YMCA acquired the lot at the corner of Cherry and Fourth Streets in 1907 for $12,500, completing the building in 1908 at a cost of $41,500. Annual membership dues at the time were $10. The YMCA operated at this downtown location until it relocated to Spruce Street in the 1920s, clearing the way for future downtown commercial development (such as the Nissen Building).
