What is Nappa?

Nappa by Silk Plaster is a decorative paint with a calm matt, velvety finish. It gives walls the look of suede, velvet, leather or even marble - a modern take on the soft limewash style, but washable once fully cured. Worked in thin layers it builds depth and a gentle play of light.

This is not ordinary emulsion. Nappa is worked into the wall with a trowel or a decorative brush to create the effect - it is not simply rolled on.

Sizes and coverage (approximate)

As a guide Nappa covers about 6-8 m² per litre in two coats; real coverage depends on the wall, the tool and your technique.

Optional: white primer

Nappa looks best on a primed wall. Silk Plaster Base T is a white primer developed for decorative acrylic paints such as Nappa, Sabbia and Seta: it gives an even white base, improves adhesion and reduces the absorbency of the wall. Apply two coats with a roller on a clean, dry, stable wall and let the first coat dry fully. Coverage about 10 m² per litre. Choose the size in the "White primer" menu and it is added to your order.

Optional: tools

Photos of the tools are in the gallery.

How to apply Nappa

  1. Prepare the wall. The surface must be clean, dry, smooth, sound and free of dust, grease and mould. Prime it - Silk Plaster Base T is recommended.
  2. Mix. Stir slowly (low speed) until the paint is uniform and let it stand 10-15 minutes. Do not dilute.
  3. First coat. Apply a thin coat in short strokes in different directions, working in sections of about 1 m² on a wet edge to avoid gaps and overlaps.
  4. Create the effect. Smooth the fresh paint with a clean, dry brush (suede / leather) or with a trowel held at a shallow angle (velvet, nubuck, marble-like effect).
  5. Second coat. Wait until the first coat is fully dry (about 6 hours) and repeat. Use paint from the same batch for large areas.
