Up for sale is a rare, authentic 1850 mid-19th-century tinted and hand-colored lithograph panorama of New York City, titled "Des Auswanderers Sehnsucht" (The Emigrant's Longing).

This historic piece was printed in Germany by the renowned workshop of Johann Friedrich Hesse (marked along the lower right border as "Druck v. J. Hesse in Berlin"). The top margin features the secondary title: "NEW-YORK. von der Seeseite aus gesehen." (New York, seen from the sea side).

This stunning panoramic view looks north up the Hudson River across the tip of lower Manhattan. It showcases historical landmarks like Castle Clinton (Castle Garden) at the Battery, historic paddle-wheel steamships flying early American flags, and a harbor bustling with traditional multi-masted wooden sailing ships.

Unlike standard monochrome versions of this print, this specific example features original, period-accurate hand-colored watercolor details on the ships' hulls, American/foreign flags, and the brick tones of the lower Manhattan shoreline.

Condition Report (Fair Antique Condition):

Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the condition description. This 170+ year old print is entirely stable but shows expected signs of age:

• Water Staining: There is historic, light water staining along the far-left white margin. Crucially, this staining stops prior to crossing the inner decorative border line and does not breach the main harbor image.

• Edge Foxing & Toning: There is natural brown aging/toning and minor foxing spots along the outer margins and paper edges, typical for 1850s rag paper exposed to historic framing materials.

• Display Potential: Because the image itself, the central harbor scene, and both the top and bottom titles remain beautifully crisp and clear, the margin blemishes can be easily and safely hidden using a professional 2-inch custom window mat when reframing
