DESCRIPTION
An antique French Terre de Fer transferware plate from the celebrated “Nos Gloires Militaires” historical series depicting Clovis à Tolbiac (496) — the decisive battle in which the Frankish king Clovis secured victory over the Alemanni, an event closely tied to the formation of early French identity.
Rendered in finely engraved transfer print with hand-applied color accents, the composition shows Clovis mounted on horseback rallying his troops amid an energetic battlefield scene. The engraving features strong linework, expressive figures, and detailed period armor and weaponry typical of late 19th-century historical ceramics.
The reverse bears the printed backstamp reading “Nos Gloires Militaires – Terre de Fer,” confirming the series and French origin.
Plates from this line were produced as commemorative and educational decorative objects celebrating important moments from French history and were commonly displayed on walls or in cabinets rather than used for everyday dining.
Ideal for Wall or Cabinet Display in a study, library, or historical interior.
