The Battle of Honey Springs was fought on July 17, 1863, near a Confederate supply depot in Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Union forces under Brigadier General James G. Blunt faced Confederate troops led by Brigadier General Douglas H. Cooper.

The Union army included the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry and Native American soldiers of the Indian Home Guard. After several hours of fighting, Union troops prevailed; rain and unreliable Confederate ammunition helped weaken the Confederate position. Cooper’s forces withdrew, allowing the Union to strengthen its hold on Fort Gibson and much of northern Indian Territory.

Honey Springs was the largest Civil War battle fought in present-day Oklahoma.
