Rare 1929 Madame Zucca Inn Halloween Day Menu with Original Crepe Napkin, Los Angeles CA, Prohibition Era / Days After Stock Market Crash

Description

Up for sale is an original vintage 1929 Halloween dining ephemera set saved from Mme. Zucca Inn (Madame Zucca Inn) at 610 North Spring Street in Los Angeles, California. This lot includes the complete dated October 31, 1929 Halloween dinner menu bi-fold booklet along with the original illustrated crepe paper napkin that is strongly presumed to have been saved from the same evening (they were found together in a scrapbook). This dinner occurred on Halloween night just two days after the historic Black Tuesday stock market crash.

The menu is printed on orange cardstock and features an arched black cat silhouette on the cover. Inside, the left panel displays a grinning Jack-o-Lantern heading the three-dollar "Special Halloween Dinner", which included squab chicken, steak, Pumpkin Queen vegetables, and Madame Zucca parfait or pumpkin pie. The facing panel features a witch flying on a broomstick above the special suggestion column. The menu measures approximately 4.75 by 7.25 inches when closed and opens to roughly 9.5 by 7.25 inches.

The matching party napkin is made of antique crepe paper with bold two-color illustrations. The bottom half section shows witches in cornstalks and smiling carved jack-o-lanterns, while the top section reveals flying bats, scared black cats, a broom with a witch hat, and a crescent moon with an owl wearing a graduation cap. The napkin measures approximately 6.75 by 6.75 inches folded.

Condition

The menu has crisp interior printing, solid edges, and an intact spine fold. The orange color is not consistent throughout with some fading present to pages; the back cover shows adhesive residue and and associated discoloration from where it was originally mounted into a period scrapbook.  Several names are written in pen on the front just to the right of the cat image (these were the attendees that joined the original owner at the event).

The fragile crepe paper napkin opens in half as shown, but it retains scrapbook paper and glue remnants so it cannot be safely opened fully. A few small tears and creases present but no major paper loss across the main illustrated panels.

Please review all photos next to the ruler for detailed condition and sizing and just let me know if you have any questions prior to purchase.
