“We gave em Jutland!”

Preston Cribb (1876-1937) was an illustrator, etcher and cartoonist. According to Johnson and Greutzner, he studied at Portsmouth and London. He is recorded as having exhibited his work at the Royal Academy, London. Additionally, he exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, where he lived. He was renowned for his comedic cartoons during WW1 mocking the Imperial German forces.

This particular Royal Navy cartoon in original frame is in good condition with some foxing and slight discoloration commensurate with its age and use. It depicts a sailors head off the under fire HMS Lion (Splendid Cats Battlecruiser) emerging from the funnel smoke with the phrase “ We gave em Jutland” and is signed by the artist to the bottom right. It also has the Copyright mark for J.F.E Grundy of the Strand, London who obtained this prior to using it to publish in newspapers and propaganda posters. It measures 17” x 25” and has its original backing and framing label.
