Antique late Victorian Githic Revival oak stationery box & writing slope - c.1895
Up for auction is a beautifully characterful, authentic antique English oak stationery box and writing slope combination dating from the late Victorian period (circa 1880–1900). A fantastic piece, perfect for a collector or as a functional vintage desk organiser. It is made of solid English oak with a rich, historic dark patina and sturdy manual construction. It features an intricately detailed, high-relief cast metal Gothic/Renaissance style maiden/Green Man mask centerpiece alongside ornate corner brackets. The inside is tiered, stepped horizontal letter racks with a vertical partition for postal separation. Features a dark circular shadow in the bottom well where a period inkwell originally sat. There is no lock on the item. The box lid opens to become a fold-down slope revealing its original, beautifully aged tooled writing insert pad framed by an oak border. It retains its original manual brass butt-hinges and period single-slot screws. Approximate Dimensions: Width: 11½ inches (29.5 cm) Height: 8¾ inches (22 cm) Depth: 4¼ inches (10.5 cm) This item is sold in honest, 'as-found' antique condition with superb historical character. The oak shows a beautiful tight grain structure with expected age-related wear, including minor chips on the top rim lid edges and base corners. There is historical ink staining inside the tiers (as pictured). There is a minor split in the wood on the bottom left of the front panel ( see photos) which could easily be restored.. There is no inkwell with the item. The hinges remain strong, flush, and operate smoothly. Please study all high-resolution photos carefully for an exact look at condition.
