Name: Follicrinus sp. (?)
Age: Devonian
Formation: Hunsruck Shale (Bundenbach)
Location: Bundenbach, Germany
Size: Crinoid is 3.2 inches long!
We recently acquired some nice fossils from the late Joseph Butterfield Collection (NJ). We will be auctioning these fossils here over the next few weeks.
This is a very cool crinoid fossil. It is a nice Follicrinus (?) Crinoid from the famous Bundenbach slate quarries. Since the quarries have closed, the only way to acquire specimens is from old collections - this specimen IS from an old collection. The striking crinoid has very nice detail intact and was fossilized in a very aesthetic pose - the many branching arms are splayed out, and the long stem is extremely straight. The ancient "sea lily" is very well-preserved and displays well on the squared slate roofing shingle (both images were taken in natural sunlight, one image reflects the sun.). This is a very distinct crinoid fossil from the classic German Bundenbach locality. (From the Butterfield Collection.)
