The absolute defining
moment of the 1978 event was the Funny Car final between two of the sport's
greatest titans and business partners: Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and
Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen. Just two weeks before the race, McEwen’s
14-year-old son, Jamie, passed away after a battle with leukemia. Before his
death, Jamie had told his father that he wanted him to race at Indy and beat
the heavily favored Prudhomme. Urged by Prudhomme to compete as a form of
therapy, McEwen made it all the way to the final round.
In a legendary upset,
McEwen clocking a 6.05-second run defeated Prudhomme (who smoked his tires and
ran a 6.33). Instead of immediately leaving the track as he typically did after
a loss, a deeply moved Prudhomme climbed into McEwen's Corvette Funny Car to
embrace his grieving friend.
