The accent in this portrait is as much on Mozart's romantic tribulations as it is on his efforts for recognition in his chosen work. The composer is shown being thwarted by his first love, after which episode he elopes with that fickle lady's sister. The jilter returns to the story as the star of "Don Giovanni," thereby nearly breaking up the happy Mozart home. As counterpoint to romance, Mozart is undermined at court and elsewhere by a formula villain, one Antonio Salieri, a rival composer, who fears Mozart's music will supplant his own but who, nevertheless, recognizes his genius.
