Developed and published by New World Computing in 1990, King's Bounty is a fantasy turn-based strategy game designed by Jon Van Caneghem. Serving King Maximus, the player must recover the stolen Sceptre of Order by exploring four continents, choosing from the Knight, Paladin, Barbarian, or Sorceress classes, recruiting armies ranging from conventional soldiers to powerful fantasy creatures, capturing villain-held castles, collecting artifacts, and fighting tactical battles with stacked units. Leadership, magic, weekly troop costs, a limited amount of time, and randomized locations for enemies, treasures, and objectives give each campaign a strong emphasis on exploration, army management, and efficient planning.
King's Bounty became an important design precursor to New World Computing's later Heroes of Might and Magic series. Its combination of a roaming hero, recruitable creature armies, character advancement, strategic exploration, castle encounters, and turn-based tactical combat established many of the ideas that Jon Van Caneghem and New World Computing would expand into a much larger strategy framework with Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest in 1995. The connection was substantial enough that the original game was later included in Heroes compilations and reworked as Heroes of Might and Magic: Quest for the DragonBone Staff in 2001.
Collectors interested in King's Bounty may also want to explore Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest (1995), which expanded its hero-led army concept into a broader strategy game; Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars (1996), a major refinement of that formula with additional factions and creatures; Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia (1999), one of the best-known later developments of the same design lineage; Heroes of Might and Magic: Quest for the DragonBone Staff (2001), a direct 3D reworking of King's Bounty; and King's Bounty: The Legend (2008), which revived the original name and its blend of fantasy exploration, army building, and tactical combat.
