Developed by Human Head Studios and published by Gathering of Developers in 2000, Rune is a third-person action-adventure built around brutal close-quarters combat and Norse mythology. Players control the young Viking warrior Ragnar as he journeys through caverns, fortresses, frozen landscapes, and mythological realms while confronting rival Vikings and supernatural creatures. Combat emphasizes swords, axes, hammers, shields, weapon throwing, dismemberment, and rune-powered abilities, with a lengthy single-player campaign accompanied by network deathmatch and team-based multiplayer modes.

Rune (2000) was a notable early example of Unreal-based technology being adapted away from traditional first-person shooting and toward a third-person, melee-centered action game. Human Head used an enhanced version of the Unreal Tournament engine for skeletal animation, detailed character reactions, particle effects, and weapon-based combat. The studio itself was formed in part by former Raven Software developers associated with Heretic (1994) and Hexen (1995), giving Rune a strong connection to the lineage of dark-fantasy action games of the 1990s. Its pre-release showing also received Best Action Game of Show recognition from both GamesWeekly and Gamers Revolution.

Collectors interested in Rune (2000) may also want to explore Heretic II (1998), a third-person dark-fantasy action game connected to the Raven Software lineage; Die by the Sword (1998), another early 3D action-adventure built around direct melee combat and dismemberment; Rune: Halls of Valhalla (2001), the standalone multiplayer-focused expansion to Rune; Rune Gold (2001), the compilation pairing the original game with Halls of Valhalla; and Severance: Blade of Darkness (2001), a similarly combat-heavy fantasy action game centered on brutal close-range weapon fighting.
