Developed by Stainless Software and published in North America by Interplay Productions in 1998, Carmageddon: Max Pack is the compilation release combining Carmageddon with its official Carmageddon: Splat Pack expansion. The package expands the original free-form combat-racing formula to more than 50 tracks and 40 opponent vehicles, with events that can be won by completing the course, wrecking every rival, or eliminating all pedestrians. Credits earned through destruction can be spent on repairs and upgrades, while Carmageddon: Splat Pack adds 20 tracks, 15 new opponent vehicles, nine environments, additional network levels, and 3Dfx support.

Carmageddon (1997) helped define the free-form vehicular-combat racer by making conventional checkpoint racing only one of several ways to complete an event. Its collision physics, vehicle damage, open-ended courses, dark humor, and deliberately extreme violence made it one of the most recognizable and controversial driving games of the late 1990s. Carmageddon: Max Pack (1998) brought the original game and its expansion together in a single release and received a nomination for PC Action Game of the Year at the inaugural Interactive Achievement Awards.

Collectors interested in Carmageddon: Max Pack (1998) may also want to explore Carmageddon (1997), the original game included in the compilation; Carmageddon: Splat Pack (1997), its official expansion; Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now (1998), the direct sequel; Death Rally (1996), another combat racer built around destructive vehicular competition; Interstate '76 (1997), a vehicular-combat game with a similarly destructive focus; and Destruction Derby 2 (1996), a collision-heavy racing title centered on wrecking opponents.
