This antique Japanese Bizen ware storage jar (tsubo) dates to the Edo period. Its compact rounded body, sturdy shoulder and wide opening reflect the strong, functional proportions of traditional Japanese stoneware.

The unglazed surface displays a deep reddish-brown firing color, rough clay texture and natural kiln variations. Small raised clay details around the shoulder lend the piece an individual sculptural character. Its rustic form makes it attractive both as a study piece of historical Bizen pottery and as a decorative Japanese antique.
