About This Meteorite
This sample represents the Moon's ancient magnetic and thermal history!
Scientists study these valuable samples because they provide clues about the volcanic and impact history of our Moon, as well as the ancient lunar magnetic field. They use a combination of a polarizing microscope and electron microprobe analysis to study the composition of lunar meteorites. They are also compared to the composition of the Apollo mission samples that were brought back by astronauts.
Lunar meteorites are found on Earth as a result of a rare event that occurred in outer space! An asteroid traveling through our solar system, perhaps from the asteroid belt in between Mars and Jupiter, crashed violently into our Moon and ejected material off of the Moon. That ejected material then traveled about 250,000 miles from the Moon to Earth, entered Earth's atmosphere as a meteor, survived the journey through our atmosphere and landed as a meteorite!

As an astronomer and meteorite hunter, I am fascinated by the journey meteorites have taken through space and the scientific insights they hold.
The Cosmos has an extraordinary story to tell—this meteorite preserves one small chapter of it.
