We present a charming landscape study in oils, with figures on a wooden bridge, another flyfishing on the river below. This is an oil painting, on artist millboard, dating c1850 to 1870 in our opinion, we are listing as ‘Follower of William E Jones, British – Bristol School, active 1818 – c1870. The panting appears unsigned, with a reference to an artist on a label to verso, the previous owner attributing this to a W G Jones and a date of 1876. Erroneously described, this painting is very much in the style and subject arena of Willaim E Jones. A prolific painter of rural, social scenes and maritime subjects, based in the Bristal Somerset, western England, Jones exhibited his work widely including at the Royal Academy ,the British Institute during his much-celebrated career. His paintings were busy, enclosed, almost claustrophobic, full of activity and life. Many examples of the work of William Jones can be seen on artprice.ocm, invaluable.com, askart.com, artnet.com and arcadia.com besides several provincial galleries and auction sites, including bonhams.com and christies.com.
