Liopleurodon was a marine reptile belonging to the pliosaurs, a branch of the plesiosaur family tree. It lived during the Middle to Late Jurassic and is known from fossils found in Europe. Unlike the long-necked plesiosaurs, pliosaurs had relatively short necks and large heads. Their pointed teeth were suited to gripping prey in the water. Liopleurodon moved using four strong flippers, which provided propulsion and manoeuvrability. The CollectA figure offers a useful contrast with long-necked marine reptiles such as Elasmosaurus.
