Stem Marked: To My Darling
Likely c1930’s-40’s, Nice!
Offering an excellent looking Signature branded pipe. Some detective work helped me to finally figure out what company made these “Signature” branded pipes. It was: Larus & Brother Company was a diversified tobacco business headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.
I’ve seen these over the decades, and really like the idea that people had personalized pipes made as special gifts, by having writing etched on the top of the stem. This one has To My Darling, in a cursive styling, and that can apply to you! The company probably had people fill in what should be etched in an order form, and then they made it, and mailed it out to the customer. Larus and Brother Co. was a tobacco company, which is known for Edgeworth and Holiday brand of pipe tobacco, and also cigarettes. This pipe is likely from the 1930’s, with the “IMPORTED BRUYERE” spelling, the British spelling normally only seen on very early American pipes. The bowl shows off some pretty grain, rich color and nice contrast. The stem has “L” on the side, for Larus, and the personalized etching on top in gold. The bowl has just light wear, same with the stem. The stem is made of vulcanite, has a screw-mount tenon, and a stinger. No tooth marks, draws well. Weighs in at about 1.14 ounces, 32.3 grams, feels good in the hand. Freshly polished, is ready to smoke!
