- Michael Frank's untimely death in relation to .strandberg* guitars points to the passing of legendary pickup and guitar electronics designer Michael Frank-Braun. He passed away in 2023.
Product Details:
Signature Design: Strandberg worked directly with Plini and legendary pickup designer Michael Frank-Braun to develop a unique, custom-voiced signature pickup set for his models, alongside separate generic voicings like Prog, Fusion, Original, Metal, and Classic.
Sonic Characteristics: Reviewers and player discussions describe the Plini signature pickups as custom-modified variations featuring moderate output and a strong midrange focus, tailored specifically for Plini's progressive style rather than falling strictly under the separate factory-voiced "Prog" or "Fusion" MF catalog categories.
Everything about the .strandberg* MF pickups
"We spent several years working together with the legendary pickup designer Michael Frank-Braun to develop a line of pickups that were voiced to work specifically with our construction and material selections, to provide an end result better than anything else out there."
In addition to voicing the Original, Metal, Prog, Fusion, and Classic pickups, we also worked with Plini and Alex Machacek to develop signature pickups for them.
Sadly, Michael passed away in 2023, and it was not possible to continue running the MFB Pickups business.
This impacted select .strandberg* guitar models, and we chose to replace the MF pickups with Suhr pickups. This was a natural solution as we have a great working relationship with Suhr and their pickups have been our go-to for many years.
The .strandberg* MF pickups are the result of a close collaboration between .strandberg* and renowned pickups and guitar electronics designer Michael Frank who has designed some top-flight pickups for artists such as Guthrie Govan and Eric Johnson as well as various other pickups for the largest guitar manufacturer in the world.
Michael Frank-Braun (MFB) Era: Earlier versions featured custom-voiced .strandberg* MF Plini Edition passive humbuckers developed closely with pickup designer Michael Frank-Braun before his passing.
Suhr Era: Newer and current iterations of the Plini signature models come factory-equipped with premium Suhr humbuckers—specifically a Suhr SSH+ in the bridge position and a Suhr SSV in the neck position.
Impact on .strandberg* Guitars
- Discontinuation of MF Pickups: Prior to his passing, Michael Frank-Braun partnered closely with .strandberg* to design a line of proprietary passive humbuckers—known as .strandberg* MF Pickups (including the Original, Metal, Prog, Fusion, Classic, and artist signature models for Plini and Alex Machacek).
- Business Closure: Because he ran MFB Pickups independently, his sudden passing made it impossible for the business to continue production.
- The Switch to Suhr and Seymour Duncan: Consequently, Strandberg was forced to officially discontinue the MF pickup line and transition their guitar models over to premium alternatives, such as Suhr and Seymour Duncan pickups.
- The Designer: Michael Frank-Braun built a reputation as a "mad scientist" of guitar electronics, crafting custom shop pickups and circuitry for iconic artists like Eric Johnson, Guthrie Govan, and Plini.
- Strandberg Partnership: Strandberg worked closely with Michael Frank-Braun to develop their proprietary Strandberg MF / MFB pickups (featured in models like the Boden and Sälen lines, as well as the Plini Signature edition), known for clarity, dynamic response, and rich mid-range. Strandberg later transitioned away from MFB pickups to Suhr pickups following Michael's passing.
- Tonal Characteristics: They are generally praised for offering high clarity, balanced frequency spectrums, big punchy lows, and extreme responsiveness to volume control adjustments
