A very worn volume, which as can be seen from the images both the front and rear boards are detached and rather surface worn and scuffed, with wear and loss to edges. The spine covering is almost entirely chipped away, and headbands lacking. The outer edges are triple gilt. Internally, there are marbled endpapers to the front and rear. The free endpapers and blanks to the front and rear are loose/detached, are chipped and worn to edges with loss, and foxed/browned. There is a previous owner's name and small ink stamped date to the rear blank. The engraved frontispiece and title page are heavily foxed with offsetting. There is a previous owner's name to the top of the title page. The main body of the contents have some toning and scattered foxing and there is a little underlining and a couple of annotations. Readable and complete.

An early 19thC edition of this historical memoir written by Sir Thomas Herbert, a devoted courtier who served closely as the Groom of the Chambers to King Charles I during his final two years of his captivity, before his execution in 1649. It is an intimate, and sympathetic, first hand account of the daily life, personal conduct, and ultimate downfall of King Charles. Capturing the tension of the era of the English Civil War from inside the royal household. This edition also includes a detailed account of the King's funeral in Windsor, through a letter sent by Herbert to the prominent antiquarian Sir William Dugdale.
