PRETTIEST GEORGIAN
9CT GOLD &
5 GARNET
HALF HOOP RING
This pretty, pretty ring is from the
Georgian period which
means it
dates to c.1800 or
thereabouts
and is in remarkable
condition.
It’s a classic
Georgian half hoop
ring set with five
flat topped
garnets in an
enclosed, foil
back setting which
was the
construction of
choice at this
period of time as it presented
coloured stones like
garnets in
their best light.
These five garnets
are beautifully
matched in colour and
clarity,
each one displaying gorgeous
flashes of the deepest
burgundy
or red wine/Claret colour and
are both collet and
claw set for
extra security I
would say.
The band is of a simple
but elegant
light coloured 9ct gold
wire design
consisting of a wire on
each side of
the head of the ring that
sweep down
into a three wire shaft – there are
no gold markings which is correct
for a ring of this age
but tests
strongly for 9ct
gold.
It is in amazingly
good 220 year
old condition.
It doesn’t look like there has ever
been a necessity to
repair any of
part of it nor can I
see any evidence
of it ever being resized.
It’s small but not
out of round like
a ring that has been
made much
smaller or larger
tends to be.
It fits comfortably
on my pinky,
which is not the
biggest pinky
in the world but now
not the
smallest either (used
to be
when I was young and
thin!)
I am including the
antique ring
box with it as it has
lived in this
box for a long time
but they are
not original to each other – still
present nicely though
even if
the box is a bit
roughed up.
It is from T Gaunt
& Co of Melbourne
who opened in the mid
1800s and
closed in 1960 so an
interesting
item in it’s own right.
This Georgian 9ct
gold garnet half hoop
ring is about as
pretty as they come
and certainly in
about as best
condition as you
could hope
to find.

CONDITION
In excellent antique condition
with few signs of age or use.
Some of the garnets have the
lightest of light surface marks but
I would not consider
them scrapes
nor is there
any visible wear to the
facets that I could see and no chips
as such, just one tiny, tiny nick in one
of the end garnets
but barely noticeable
even with a
jeweller’s loop and only
mentioning for accuracy of description.
This really is in amazing condition
BUT
needs a professional buff to the
gold itself.
This ring must NOT go into water or
the foil backing will likely be damaged
and ruin the look
of the garnets.
Take it off to wash
your hands, do the
dishes, gardening, showering
etc.
Don't worry if it gets splashed, just
wipe/pat dry immediately.
I haven’t cleaned it for this reason but
the gold setting would really benefit from
a good buff by
a jeweller who doesn’t
require a liquid to clean it.
As you can see the stones are fine
it’s just the gold shaft and in particular
between the wires that has oxidized
a little that
needs some TLC.
DIMENSIONS
The head of the ring measures approximately:
5.6 x 0.5mm
The ring size is Australian J and a bit
approx. = 4.75 – 5.00 USA
Weight is: 1.5grams
