The  Stingy Farmer's Dream; or the History of Thomas Hownham; shewing in what an extraordinary manner a starving Family was relieved by the Farmer; and how he repented of it till the day of his death. To which is added, The Remarkable Story of the Friar and the Night Whisper.  (London, Printed by A. Applegath and E. Cowper, sold by F. Collins and J. Nisbet, no date (1820s)).

17.5 x 11 cms. 8 pages.

Religious tract with the story of Thomas Hownham and his family who were saved from starvation by the gift of food from a miserly farmer named Strangeways who was directed to act against type by a dream. In the second story a friar is converted to Protestantism by the prayerful whispering of a minister.

Augustus Applegarth, the printer of this tract, is notable for his development of printing machinery, in particular for the Bank of England and The Times newspaper, although he was declared bankrupt in 1826, ending his association with Cowper.
