An authentic pre-war Japanese athletic club or collegiate uniform belt buckle depicting amateur Greco-Roman / freestyle wrestling. The front features a high-relief stamped scene of two grapplers locked on the mat, beneath bold raised block typography reading "WRESTLING". Finished in a handsome aged bronze/brass patina with a fine stippled ground.
Western-style amateur wrestling gained prominence in Japan throughout the late 1920s and early 1930s following its collegiate adoption and Olympic representation, making English-lettered equipment buckles from this interwar window exceptionally scarce.
The reverse features the classic pre-war uniform hardware setup with a heavy cast/soldered stationary catch bar and an intact hinged loop designed for an unpunched canvas or webbed belt.
