Stunning Vintage Hand-Carved Mexican Folk Art Dance Mask – Guerrero Region

Up for sale is an authentic, highly expressive vintage Mexican ceremonial dance mask originating from the culturally rich state of Guerrero. This unique piece features a stylized elongated face coated in a striking green polychrome finish. A prominent lizard (chintete) or reptilian motif is intricately integrated right into the ridge of the nose—a classic hallmark of Nahua tribal craftsmanship from the southern Mexican mountains.

The mask boasts incredible character, with hand-painted yellow and red "sun ray" details flanking the eyes and traditional dark fiber hair plugs threaded along the brow and jawline. The heavily hollowed-out reverse side exhibits smooth contour edges and a top perforation, showcasing genuine handling, age, and characteristics consistent with traditional festival performance. Condition Report:

This mask is in wonderful, rustic vintage condition and displays excellent patina. To be precise for collectors: there are visible paint chips and scuffs exposing the raw wood beneath, along with sparse or missing hair strands in several spots. These imperfections are entirely typical for genuine, danced folk art pieces and only add to its primitive, historical charm. No major structural cracks or splits.
