Mullikin commanded a unique pole-to-pole flight. Departing and returning to San Francisco, the flight crossed over both the North and South Poles with stops in London, Cape Town, and Auckland, breaking seven world records.  Captain Walter Harper Mullikin was a highly distinguished aviator who enjoyed an extraordinary career with Pan American World Airways (Pan Am), eventually rising to become the airline's Senior Vice President of Flight Operations. He is best remembered for commanding two historic, record-shattering around-the-world flights using Pan Am’s ultra-long-range Boeing 747SP aircraft: The Liberty Bell Express (May 1–3, 1976): As Pan Am's chief pilot, Capt. Mullikin commanded a historic eastbound circumnavigation from New York (JFK) with stops only in New Delhi and Tokyo. The flight carrying 98 passengers set a commercial around-the-world speed record, completing the 23,137-mile journey in 46 hours and 1 second (with just 39 hours and 25 minutes of actual flight time).
