Original vintage 1976 Playbill for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue from the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia, presented during the musical’s pre-Broadway tryout.
This is an especially interesting early program because the Philadelphia engagement ran from February 24 through March 13, 1976, before the production moved to Washington, D.C. and eventually Broadway.
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue featured music by Leonard Bernstein and book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, marking their only Broadway collaboration. The cast included Ken Howard, Patricia Routledge, Gilbert Price, Emily Yancy, and a large ensemble.
The musical later opened on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on May 4, 1976 and closed just four days later after only 7 regular performances and 13 previews, making it one of the most famous Broadway flops of the 1970s.
This particular copy also includes an original separate ensemble cast insert, listing singers, dancers, swings, and additional company members from the Philadelphia production. That surviving pre-Broadway insert adds considerably to the historical interest of the program.
Original vintage Playbill and insert, not reproductions. Condition shows expected age-related toning and handling wear. Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition of the cover, pages, staples, markings, and accompanying insert.
A scarce piece of pre-Broadway history for collectors of Leonard Bernstein, Alan Jay Lerner, Ken Howard, Patricia Routledge, legendary Broadway flops, and 1970s musical theater memorabilia.
