Gianni Novak Tarot Dal Negro Alitalia 1973 Limited Edition of 5500 Vintage

An Italian artist’s tarot illustrated by Gianni Novak and printed by Dal Negro for Alitalia, issued in an edition of 5,500 numbered copies. Commonly known as the Alitalia Tarot or Tarocchi di Gianni Novak, this deck brings a distinctly modern graphic approach to the traditional 78-card tarot.

Please note: This deck is in exceptionally great condition, I have owned at least 3 of these and none have been of this caliber. This deck is essentially mint condition. Seeing that it has survived 50+ years in this shape, the asking price is a premium.

Novak’s illustrations feature broad areas of contrasting color, angular figures, and simplified geometric forms. The compositions reinterpret familiar tarot subjects through the visual language of early 1970s Italian art and design. Saturated oranges, blues, purples, and other contrasting tones give the images a strong graphic presence, while the stylized figures preserve the recognizable identities of the cards.

The artwork carries Novak’s name and the date 1973 within the printed designs. The deck encompasses both Major and Minor Arcana, offering an extended presentation of his artistic interpretation across the tarot sequence. Alitalia branding on the card backs connects the work to its original corporate commission, giving it additional interest as a piece of Italian airline and design history.

The edition was produced in 5,500 copies numbered in Arabic numerals, with a separate allocation of 200 copies numbered in Roman numerals for the artist and publisher. Printing was undertaken by Dal Negro of Treviso, with Biancoenero of Rome credited as publisher.
