Lightweight Super-Telephoto Design
Capture distant subjects with a high-performance 400mm F4.5 super-telephoto prime lens weighing just 994 g (35.1 oz.). Its compact 242 mm (9.5 in.) length and well-balanced design provide excellent mobility and comfortable handheld operation for wildlife, sports, and outdoor photography.
Outstanding G Master Image Quality
An advanced G Master optical design uses Super ED and ED glass elements to minimize aberrations and deliver impressive resolution and detail. Sony Nano Coating II helps suppress flare and ghosting, maintaining excellent clarity and contrast even when shooting challenging backlit scenes.
Smooth, Beautiful Bokeh
Individually calibrated spherical aberration and an 11-blade circular aperture produce smooth, natural-looking bokeh. Combined with the compressed perspective of the 400mm focal length, the lens creates strong subject separation for striking super-telephoto images.
Fast and Precise Autofocus
Two advanced XD Linear Motors and a refined AF algorithm provide fast, precise, and quiet focusing and subject tracking. The system is designed to follow unpredictable movement and supports high-speed shooting, including bursts up to 120 fps with compatible cameras such as the α9 III.
Optimized for Professional Video
Focus breathing is effectively suppressed for smoother, more natural-looking footage. Quiet XD Linear Motors and aperture operation help minimize unwanted lens noise, while Linear Response MF provides responsive and intuitive manual focus control.
Extended Reach with Teleconverters
Compatible optional teleconverters can extend the lens's focal length up to 800mm, providing additional reach for distant wildlife, sports, and other subjects without sacrificing the convenience of the lens's compact design.
Optical Image Stabilization
Built-in optical image stabilization offers selectable modes for steadier framing and sharper handheld results. When paired with a compatible camera body, the lens and camera stabilization systems work together for enhanced stability.
Customizable Shooting Controls
Four focus hold buttons provide convenient access in horizontal or vertical shooting positions. The customizable function ring can control features such as APS-C/Full Frame switching, Preset Focus, or Power Focus, while dedicated stabilization controls make it easy to select the appropriate OSS setting.
Flexible Focus Control
Full-time DMF allows quick manual focus adjustments simply by rotating the focus ring when autofocus locks onto the wrong subject. A Focus Range Limit switch can restrict the focusing distance to help improve AF speed and responsiveness in specific shooting situations.
Built for Outdoor Shooting
A dust- and moisture-resistant design enhances reliability when working in demanding outdoor environments. The front element also features a fluorine coating that helps resist fingerprints, moisture, oil, and other contaminants while making the lens easier to clean.
