VINTAGE

PHOTOGRAPH

ALBUM FROM 1916 ERA

THIS PHOTO 1916

HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY

AI INFO BELOW:

NOT SURE IF CORRECT?

This photograph shows the massive German ocean liner SS Vaterland interned at the Hoboken, New Jersey docks during World War One.
The ship dominating the center of the image with the three tall smokestacks is the Vaterland. Owned by the Hamburg-American Line, it was the largest passenger ship in the world when it entered service in 1914.
The identity of this ship is confirmed by its distinct physical design features and the unique historical record of the Hoboken waterfront. It is an Imperator-class ocean liner, easily recognizable by its immense superstructure and distinct three-funnel layout. There were only three ships ever built in this specific class: the Imperator, the Vaterland, and the Bismarck. The first sister, the Imperator, featured a high-profile decorative bronze eagle mascot on its bow, which is absent here. The third sister, the Bismarck, was still under construction in Germany when the war broke out and was never completed as a German liner. Therefore, the Vaterland was the only ship of this colossal design that docked at the Hoboken facilities.
Just like the ships at the nearby North German Lloyd piers, the Vaterland was stranded in port at the outbreak of the war in Europe to prevent its capture by the British navy. It arrived in late July 1914 and sat inactive at the Hoboken waterfront for nearly three years. When the United States entered the war in April 1917, the United States Navy seized the vessel and converted it into the famous troopship USS Leviathan.
The view of the ship shows its stern, or the back of the vessel, facing out toward the river. You can identify it as the stern because of its wide, rounded shape that curves down toward the water line. The pointed bow, or front of the ship, is facing away from the camera, pointing deeper into the slip toward the land. During this era, these massive ocean liners were typically backed into their pier slips by harbor tugboats so that they would be facing outward and ready to depart straight into the river channel when it was time to sail.
To the right of the ship's stern, you can see a pier building with visible letters that read LINE. This building is part of the White Star Line terminal facilities. On the actual building structure, the full text painted across the upper framework would read White Star Line, but the massive German hull blocks out the first part of the company name, leaving only the word LINE clearly visible right next to the ship's stern.
