Beautiful Antique Victorian Anglo-Indian Sadeli Micro-Mosaic & Carved Wooden Box – Mid-19th Century

A beautiful and exceptionally decorative antique Anglo-Indian wooden box, believed to date from approximately 1850–1880.

This lovely example features intricate traditional Sadeli micro-mosaic inlay, with wonderfully detailed geometric patterns surrounding a deeply carved wooden panel depicting a four-armed Hindu deity, believed to represent Matsya, an incarnation of Vishnu.

The carving is particularly impressive, with delicate scrolling foliage and floral decoration surrounding the central figure. Further beautifully carved floral panels decorate the sides of the box.

The contrasting dark wood, pale decorative edging and extraordinarily detailed mosaic work create a very striking appearance.

The interior is lined in an attractive deep purple fabric.

Condition

In very good antique condition, particularly considering its considerable age.

The beautifully detailed carving and intricate mosaic decoration are exceptionally well preserved.

There is one small section of decorative trim missing from the bottom of an end panel and a tiny chip to one corner. Otherwise, the box presents beautifully.

The interior is clean and well preserved.

The lock has been tested and is fully working, securely locking the box.
