This is a Japanese Army Type 98 gunto koshirae with a reddish-brown painted iron scabbard.

The original blade has been replaced with a wooden tsunagi. No metal blade is included, and the habaki is missing.

The handle is covered with ray skin and wrapped in brown cord, with three cherry blossom menuki on each side. The sarute ring is present.

The cast military-issue type tsuba is accompanied by two reddish-brown seppa shaped to fit it. There are no markings on the tsuba or seppa.

Condition:

The scabbard has some surface rust, but most of the paint remains. There are no bends or large dents.

The scabbard latch engages, but its hold is weak: the handle and wooden tsunagi can be pulled out with a firm pull even when the latch is engaged.

The wooden tsunagi is shorter than the scabbard and has a small dent, as shown in the photos.
