Former England International Steve Gardener reflects on almost three decades at the very top of match fishing.
"In an unrivalled 27-year career as an England International, between 1987 and 2013 match fishing legend Steve Gardener won an unprecedented 11 team gold medals, five team silver medals and two team bronze medals with his country in World Championships, picking up an individual silver and an individual bronze along the way. On the domestic front he was a founder member of the all-conquering Dorking team, winning numerous major honours with them over a period spanning four decades. In 2011 he was crowned individual National Champion on a day when Dorking also took the Division One team title for the first time. A year later, in his final National with the team, Dorking became only the second team ever - after Birmingham in 1976 - to win back to back Division One titles. Now retired from team fishing, Steve continues to fish matches all over Europe with his long-time sponsor and friend, the legendary Italy International Milo Colombo, still regularly wins opens on venues close to his home in Surrey, and enjoys sea fishing on holiday in Florida and the Caribbean."
