MAGIC JOHNSON – 1988-89 NBA MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
This sticker was released following another extraordinary season for the legendary Lakers point guard.
During the 1988-89 campaign, Johnson averaged:
- 22.5 Points Per Game
- 12.8 Assists Per Game
- 7.9 Rebounds Per Game
- 91.1% Free Throw Shooting
His exceptional performance earned him the 1989 NBA Most Valuable Player Award, the second MVP honor of his legendary career.
Johnson led the NBA in free throw percentage while directing one of basketball's most exciting offenses.
The Lakers returned to the NBA Finals that season, although a hamstring injury limited Johnson's participation as Los Angeles fell to the Detroit Pistons.
The reverse of this sticker documents these accomplishments and provides a fascinating contemporary account of Johnson's remarkable professional career.
THE SHOWTIME LAKERS DYNASTY
Magic Johnson revolutionized professional basketball with his extraordinary court vision, exceptional passing ability, versatility, and leadership.
Selected first overall by the Lakers in the 1979 NBA Draft, Johnson became the centerpiece of the team's celebrated Showtime dynasty.
His legendary career accomplishments include:
- 5 NBA Championships: 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988
- 3 NBA Most Valuable Player Awards
- 3 NBA Finals MVP Awards
- 12 NBA All-Star Selections
- 9 All-NBA First Team Selections
- 4 NBA Assists Titles
- 2 NBA Steals Titles
- 1992 Olympic Dream Team Gold Medalist
- 2002 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee
Johnson also helped lead Michigan State University to the 1979 NCAA National Championship, defeating Larry Bird's Indiana State team in one of college basketball's most memorable championship games.
His rivalry with Bird continued throughout the 1980s and helped transform the NBA into a global sporting phenomenon.
