Oscar Wilde's De Profundis in an attractive, worn red leather Ravenna-series binding, with gilt ornament on the spine and a gilt facsimile of Wilde's name on the cover. The copyright leaf records a 1909 revised copyright; this is not the 1905 first edition.
Written during Wilde's imprisonment at Reading Gaol, this extended letter addresses Lord Alfred Douglas and reflects on suffering, responsibility, love and artistic life. The Putnam edition contains a prefatory dedication by Robert Ross to Dr. Max Meyerfeld, letters from Reading Prison and additional matter.
Decorative red flexible full-leather binding with ornate gilt spine and gilt author-name script on the front. A single volume from The Works of Oscar Wilde / Ravenna series.
Handwritten date, "May 3, 1921," on front endpaper, by an unidentified writer. The gilt Oscar Wilde script on the front cover is a publisher-stamped decorative facsimile, NOT a hand-signed autograph.
Acceptable antique condition. Leather rubbed and scuffed, with wear to corners, edges and spine ends. The front pastedown has a large area of surface abrasion consistent with former label removal; the rear pastedown has extensive uneven brown discoloration and surface loss of uncertain cause. Page edges darkened. Sampled text leaves appear legible and reasonably clean; the volume has not been fully collated for completeness. No dust jacket. Please examine photographed flaws carefully.
One book only. Decorative staging figure and other books in the photos are not included.
