Two original Glasgow University Hunterian Museum geological monographs, published in 1929 and 1938, documenting Jurassic fossils and geological field collections from East Africa.

The two books in this lot

Historical interest

Both volumes were issued as part of the Monographs of the Geological Department of the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow University. They preserve early twentieth-century documentation of East African fossil assemblages, including Jurassic marine invertebrates and field collections from Jubaland, Somaliland and Kenya. The original scientific plates are particularly useful to collectors of paleontology and historical African geology.

This two-book lot

Both are original publisher's gray printed boards with brown cloth spines. They are separate volumes III and V of the series, not a complete series. They show institutional library marks, label removal, wear to boards, spine and joints, age-toned interiors and some weakened gutters. Plates are photographed but neither book has been collated leaf by leaf. The photographed copies are exactly the two books being sold together.

Provenance and inscriptions

The 1929 book has a University of Virginia institutional seal and withdrawn library markings. The 1938 volume also has institutional marks. These are former library copies, not author-signed books.

Condition and completeness

Original worn bindings with rubbed board edges, library marks, old label ghosts, cloth spine abrasion and interior toning. The 1929 volume shows some gutter weakness. No full collation performed; see photographs for condition and plates.
