Lady Cynthia Colville 1935 handwritten letter on Buckingham Palace embossed notepaper
An original handwritten letter on embossed Buckingham Palace notepaper.
A single folded sheet written on three sides.
This letter dated 3rd November 1935 was written by Lady Cynthia Colville (1884-1968) ‘Woman of the Bedchamber’ to Queen Mary. It was Lady Cynthia who, in this capacity, had to inform the Queen of the death of her son King George VI in 1952. She was also active as a philanthropist working hard to alleviate the suffering of the poor in Shoreditch, which was one of the poorest areas of the East End of London.
The letter reads: “Lady Cynthia Coalville presents her compliments to Mr John Westwood and is commanded by the Queen to thank him and the Sir Thomas Lipton Trust which he represents most warmly for the very generous gift of chocolates etc. which they have once more sent to Her Majesty for distribution at Christmas. The Queen deeply appreciates this continued kindness of the Trust in sending her Majesty this very lavish welcome gift, and it is a source of very real pleasure to the Queen to be enabled by this means to bring much cheer and happiness to the lives of children, of the poor and sick at Christmas time – 3 November 1935”
The Trust she speaks of was set up by philanthropist Sir Thomas Lipton in 1898 to help the poor.
There is a hoizontal fold across the middle, and a light diagonal crease on the first page. Still in quite good overall condition.
A nice piece memorabilia relating to the British Royal Family at the time of King George V and Queen Mary on their very own embossed headed notepaper.
