CANADA (CIRCA 1880s–1890s) PRIME
MINISTER SIR MACKENZIE BOWELL AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE ON LETTER FRAGMENT REGARDING
ONTARIO JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS
(Circa 1880s–1890s), Ottawa, Ontario, manuscript letter fragment on wove
paper diagonally torn at left, featuring a bold, flowing ink signature “MBowell”
with extended flourish underline by Sir Mackenzie Bowell (1823–1917),
5th Prime Minister of Canada. Concludes five lines of text regarding federal
judicial patronage: “...ted the views expressed by... [F]leck, as contained
in his... and shall be very glad to... wishes when Ontario Judge[ships are
un]der consideration. / Yours truly, / MBowell”. Irregular tear affecting
the left margin of text, clean paper, sound and Fine.
Sir Mackenzie Bowell, KCMG
(1823–1917), served as Canada’s 5th Prime Minister from December 1894 to April
1896, having previously held senior cabinet portfolios under Sir John A.
Macdonald and Sir John Abbott, including Minister of Customs and Minister of
Militia and Defence. A scarce prime ministerial signature preserving direct
commentary on nineteenth-century judicial appointments to the Ontario bench.
Technical & Social Commentary
- Technical Analysis: Authentic, dark ink signature
signed in his distinctive contracted style: MBowell, with the initial "M"
overlapping the capital "B" above an extended underscore.
Preserves five lines of contemporary political correspondence regarding
appointments to the Ontario judiciary.
- Historical & Political Context: Documents the late 19th-century
process of federal judicial patronage in Ontario. Under the British
North America Act, Section 96 granted the Governor General (effectively
the Prime Minister and Cabinet) the sole power to appoint judges to
superior and county courts. Ministers frequently fielded recommendations
from regional political organizers to fill vacancies on the Ontario Bench.
- Social Philately Mandate: Connects the cabinet table of
the Conservative administration to Ontario's legal establishment. Bowell
was a central figure in Victorian Canadian governance, a long-serving
Belleville newspaper publisher, Grand Master of the Orange Order, and one
of only two Canadian Prime Ministers to govern from the Senate.
- Concluding assessment: While incomplete, the stark
clarity of the Prime Minister's signature and the preserved judicial
appointment text make this an accessible and desirable single lot in the
Autographs section.
Please examine lot scan carefully and please send any questions at least 48 hours before the auction closes. Please note that cover condition usually includes normal wear and tear to cover edges, opening tears and some creases and wrinkles. Only exceptional or extreme condition issues will be mentioned.
