Attractive vintage Wabanaki ash splint sewing basket, attributed to the Penobscot people of Maine. This round covered basket features intricate weaving accented by decorative "porcupine curl" / point weave splints around the lower body and the edge of the lid.
The removable lid has a radiating woven design and a small arched splint handle. Warm honey-brown coloring highlights the contrasting widths and textures of the handwoven splints, with traces of reddish coloring visible inside.
Measures approximately 4 1/4” high overall and 5 1/4” in diameter.
Condition: Age-related wear and scattered split or broken splints, including losses to portions of the decorative curls and damage to some narrow woven strips. The basket retains its appealing form and decorative character. Please review all photographs closely for condition details.
A lovely collectible example of Northeastern fancy basketry.
