Antique & Vintage Photographs

This is a magic lantern slide that is 3¼ x 3¼ inches (83x83mm).

It shows a still life arrangement of dahlias in a pale vase standing on a polished wooden surface. The blooms include spiky cactus-type flowers in red, peach and yellow, rounded pompon heads in cream and pink, and a large bicoloured crimson and white flower at the front. A few dark green leaves rise from the arrangement, and loose petals lie scattered on the table in front of the vase. The background is a mottled pinkish-brown with soft lighting from the right. Handwritten in white on the black mask above the image is the maker's name and address, 'H. Milligan', with a street address in Manchester. The mask below the image is captioned 'The. Galaxy.' in the same hand. A small paper label is fixed to the lower left corner of the mask.
