Rubén M. Campos’s 1928 study surveys four centuries of Mexican musical traditions and preserves folk melodies, historic photographs, and musical scores.

Published in Mexico by the Secretaría de Educación Pública and printed at the Talleres Gráficos de la Nación, this illustrated Spanish-language volume considers the development of Mexican music from 1525 to 1925. Its chapters address sources of Mexican folklore, musical traditions, and the history of the country’s music. The final section, “Cien aires nacionales mexicanos para piano,” transcribes one hundred traditional melodies. Period photographs, portraits, and illustrations document musicians, bands, and cultural scenes. A prefatory letter from Secretary of Public Education J. M. Puig Casauranc, dated November 18, 1927, appears in print, not as original handwritten correspondence.
