This small post card(w/minor stains, but w/little wear and tear; stamps are all in fine condition, and the cancels are both quite excellent!) is an attractive, uncommon piece of early flight postal history! It was sent on May 20, 1924, from Madison Square Station Post Office, New York City, to Christiana, Norway, by a John (Nelson "Johnie") Wanamaker, a grandson of the founder of Wanamaker Department Store(s)! The address was The Trans-Polar Flight Expedition! Unfortunately, due to mainly financial trouble, the 1924 Trans-Polar Flight Expedition planned by Roald Amundsen failed to materialize. Thus, this mail was then carried on what was to be a trans-polar flight, that departed on May 21, 1925! Due to losing one of their two planes, etc., the expedition made it as far as the seas off the coast of northern Svalbard Island, landing there on June 15, 1925. They were hailed as heroes, nonetheless! At any rate, this post card was sold as a way to help fund the 1924 Trans-Polar Flight Expedition, and was eventually mailed back from Kings Bay(presently called Ny-Alesund, Svalbard), to Astor Place & 9th Street, New York City, U.S.A., on June 18, 1925! That was the address of the Wanamaker Department Store(s), a business started by John Wanamaker, a multi-millionaire merchant, religious, civic and political figure, and the 35th U.S. Postmaster General! He had died in 1922. Noted imperfections aside, this items remains a neat piece of aviation postal history!
