Rare 18th / Early 19th Century Continental European Mixed-Media Devotional Textile Panel – Hand-Colored Paper Cutout Appliqué & Heavy Metallic Purl Embroidery

Frame size: 14" x 17½"

Historical European textile art dating from the late 1700s to the early 1800s.

This masterfully executed mixed-media panel stands as a premier example of traditional Continental convent work (Klosterarbeit) or elite domestic schoolgirl craftsmanship, likely originating from Italy, France, or Southern Germany.

The piece features five distinct hand-colored paper engravings / cutouts appliquéd to a textile ground. The large octagonal central medallion depicts a classical or biblical seated figure with a lamb companion (highly characteristic of Saint John the Baptist or pastoral iconography). It is flanked symmetrically by four oval miniature portraits showcasing holy, papal, or crowned figures.

The surrounding background is entirely filled with dense, heavy, three-dimensional metallic cord or wire embroidery. Tightly interlocking S-scrolls, raised purl coils, and textured foliage cascade beautifully across the panel.
