The Second Polish Republic - Polish state existing in the years 1918-1939. After regaining independence in 1918 (123 years of Austrian, Prussian, and Russian partitions), Poles still had to wage fierce battles to secure the borders of the reborn state. These conflicts took place in the east against Russia and concluded with a peace treaty signed by both nations in Riga. In the west, the incorporation of Silesia, Warmia, Masuria, and Powisle into Poland depended on the results of plebiscites held in those regions. The final borders of the Second Polish Republic were established between 1920 and 1922. On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland, thereby starting World War II in Europe. Sixteen days later, the Soviets struck Poland from the east. Faced with the aggression of Germany and the USSR against Poland, the government of the Republic of Poland was forced to relocate its seat outside the country's borders to avoid captivity and forced capitulation.
