It shows a Great Western Railway steam tank locomotive, numbered 4577, stationary on railway tracks. The letters 'G W R' are painted on the side tank. Another locomotive is partially visible behind it, and figures can be seen in the distant background.
The reverse has handwritten text reading 'BATH ROAD, BRISTOL.' and the date '5/3/50.'
