Vintage Southern Railway W.L Wyllie Print of HMS Victory & Renown Southsea Advertisement
This wonderful reproduction of a W.L Wyllie watercolour painting is of the opening of the restored HMS Victory in July 1928. Wyllie was a big advocate in the campaign to save her and this painting was to commemorate the completion of the project. It depicts the crowds flocking to see the grand ole lady with battlecruiser HMS Renown in the back ground.
The posters were commissioned by Southern Railway to promote their express service to Southsea, Portsmouth in conjunction with the Illustrated Holiday Guide.
It’s in good used condition with a few minor imperfections commensurate with its age and is now professionally presented behind glass in a burr walnut frame, it has the famous message made by Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, “England Expects That Everyman Will Do His Duty”, around the border. (35” x 29”)
