Topdog Presents: Always interesting stuff!
Offered here is a magnificent antique German family Bible, the “Illustrirte Familien-Bibel,” circa 1880s, in the German translation of Dr. Martin Luther with explanatory notes by Professor Dr. Otto Delitsch. It was printed and published by A. H. Payne in Reudnitz near Leipzig. Payne’s “English Art Institute” in Leipzig was one of the great German publishers of illustrated books in the 19th century, famous for its steel engravings and richly illustrated editions. Otto Delitsch (1821–1882) was a theologian and geographer whose notes connected the Bible stories to the geography and archaeology of the Holy Land. A matching copy printed in 1886 is held in the Bible Museum of the University of Münster in Germany.
This Bible carries a wonderful piece of family history. The printed “Familien-Urkunde” family record page is filled in by hand for the marriage of Carl Veit of Donaueschingen, Baden, born in 1834, and Louise of Heilbronn, Württemberg, born in 1842, who were married on 30 July 1863. The following page records three of their children, born between 1864 and 1873 in Ulm and Heilbronn, with notes of their later lives, including a marriage in Heilbronn in 1891, a move to Chemnitz in 1891, and the emigration of their son Emil Veit to Philadelphia on 16 October 1888. It is a fine record for genealogists and anyone interested in German immigration to Pennsylvania.
The Bible is lavishly illustrated, with a portrait of Martin Luther on the title page, many wood engravings throughout the text, and a set of brightly colored chromolithograph plates (“Oeldruckbilder”), listed in an index at the front, depicting scenes from Adam and Eve’s expulsion from Paradise to the Life of Christ. The original binding is black leather with heavy blind-embossed decoration, a large gilt cross and banner reading “Illustrirte Familien-Bibel” on the front cover, an ornate gilt spine with lilies and the title, and marbled page edges. It is very large and heavy, measuring about 12 by 9 by 4 inches.
Condition is amazing for its age. The binding is solid and the covers bright, with rubbing and wear to the spine edges, joints and corners, where the underlying material shows through in places. The family record pages are toned, with creases, folds, and small tears and chips along the edges. The text pages are toned with light scattered spotting, as is normal for paper of this age. The color plates remain vivid, with a few tiny surface flecks on the Adam and Eve plate. Please see all photos, as they form part of the description.
