Ralph Lauren's "Men's Factory" Design Philosophy

The reason both the men's and women's shirts in PRL appear to button on the same side comes down to

a deliberate fashion-history choice by Ralph Lauren

When Ralph Lauren first debuted his very first line of women's clothing in 1971, his first item was a women’s Oxford shirt made in the exact same factory that produced his men's shirts.

To capture a true, authentic, menswear-inspired tailoring aesthetic, Ralph Lauren purposefully kept the traditional men's right-side button placket for many of his women's traditional cotton oxfords or linen shirts

This signature cotton oxford shirt is offered in a casual short-sleeve silhouette
